Gather 'round, it's time now to discuss my favorite movies of the year! This was actually hard, because despite watching over 120 movies this year...there weren't really 10 that stood out as favorites that weren't rewatches. Maybe THAT'S what I mean when I say I'm not a huge movie person. It takes more to hook me than it does for a book or TV show. Anyway, I only cheated a little to get this list to 10 because a list of nine was making my brain hurt, so first let's review the first half of the year's faves, which are still very high on my list:
Mean Girls was the first movie I saw in theatres this year, and it still stands out as being in the top three movies I saw overall this whole year. It wasn't perfect, but it brought me SO much joy, and continues to do so. Argylle was an unexpected favorite, and even though it Dua-Lipa-baited me, I had a great time, and have watched it again since. Talk to Me was unique and fun and scary and I still think about it randomly sometimes; I'd watch more movies that followed that creepy-ass hand around the world. The Deep House is one I recommend to people when they ask me for horror movie recs because it was such a classic haunted house movie in some ways, but also so new with the twist of being entirely underwater. And Abigail was a damn blast, with Alisha Weir SHINING in the titular role, and I can't wait to see what else the creators of Ready or Not come up with next.
So, consider those five of my top ten of the year, and of course you can read my longer reviews of them in my mid-year post. As a reminder, these longer reviews will sometimes have more spoilers than the micro-reviews, so scroll with caution. Now, in no particular order, on to the second half of the top ten.
